Next generation - who will take over from tennis' Big Three


Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are traditionally known as tennis' big three players.
 
The trio has dominated the game in the last 15 years, winning 56 grand slam titles between them and they find themselves in the top four on the current ATP world rankings.
 
But when will the next generation take over the baton from the three tennis icons?
 
Below are a list of players who are most likely to be the big dogs of men's tennis when Federer, Djokovic and Nadal fade or retire.
 
We also take a look at their best results in grand slam competitions, namely the Australian Open, French Open, US Open and Wimbledon.

Daniil Medvedev


ATP Ranking: 5
Australian Open: Fourth Round
French Open: First Round
Wimbledon: Third Round 
US Open: Final
 
The 24-year-old is a highly-rated Russian player and has been tipped to become world number one in the future. 
 
Medvedev, who has won seven ATP singles titles, including two Masters 100 titles, is the youngest player amongst the top five ranked players on the current ATP world rankings.
 
The starlet has been praised by tennis legend Marat Safin, who remains the only Russian player to become world number one.

"I believe Medvedev can be number one in the world," Safin was quoted as saying on Tennis World USA.

"All-around game, we just need to work on the certain small things that, which is, I'm sure that his coach, he knows what to do."

The Greek star, who is widely regarded as the future of tennis, is the reigning champion at the ATP Finals and he is also the youngest winner of the year-end championship in eighteen years.
 
Tsitsipas has improved gradually since he reached the 2019 Australian Open semi-finals where he lost to Nadal and rose into the top 10 of the ATP world rankings.
 
The 21-year-old player is on the right path to dominating the men’s game according to Serbian superstar Djokovic. 

“I think he’s more present than future. He’s been very successful already," Djokovic said on Greek Herald.

"He’s more than just a great tennis player, a great guy, very charismatic. I’m sure he’s going to bring some great things to our sport."

The 22-year-old player made headlines when he was crowned 2018 ATP Finals champion and became the youngest winner at the year-end championship in a decade.
 
Zverev clinched two ATP titles and also upset then world number three Federer on grass. He was the youngest player to debut in the top 20 since Djokovic as a 20-year-old.
 
Former world number one Andy Murray has praised Zverev as he believes that the German player will improve a lot.

“Obviously Zverev has a lot of potential and he’s won the most of the young guys," Murray said on Tennis 365.

"If you have a few bad months it’s easy for people to forget that and start writing you off. But he’s a young guy who can improve a lot."
