Winning a major trophy is the hardest thing to do in tennis as it usually requires luck, talent and timing.

We rank the toughest tennis tournaments in the world.

5 - World Tour Finals

This is the second-highest tier of annual men's tennis tournament after the four Grand Slam tournaments.

The competition is one of the most difficult tennis tournaments to win as it features the top eight singles players and doubles teams of the ATP Rankings.

A player is required to play a Top-8 player and he or she gets a day of rest, and then repeats the process twice in the group stage in order to reach the semi-finals..

“The results, I can't predict,” Djokovic said ahead of his 2016 ATP Would Tour final clash against Andy Murray, who won following an enthralling encounter.

“I can't expect anything except to really get myself in the right state of mind and try to perform as well as I did tonight. That's going to be my only goal.”

4 - US Open

This has chronologically been the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year since 1987 and starts on the last Monday of August.

It has proved to be difficult to win as there is usually wind and constant rain in the Flushing Meadows, New York around August and this makes the court pretty fast.

Roger Federer was unbeatable in this competition between 2004 and 2008 (won five titles in a row) having mastered the art of playing in gruelling weather conditions in New York.

3 - Wimbledon

This the only major still played on grass and it is widely considered as the classic tennis tournament. It begins in early July in Wimbledon, London, England.

The playing surface is known to be very quick and also slippery, and this requires one to be good when it comes to being quick and powerful.

Novak Djokovic, who has won the last two Wimbledon titles, is quick and boasts a powerful serve which means he has flourished in the tournament in recent years.

2 - Australian Open

This is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year around January and it is usually played during summer.

Scorching temperatures play a role in players' performances as this competition produces more five-setters than in other tournaments.

American starlet Sofia Kenin, who is no stranger to heat as she grew up in Florida, USA, flourished under hot conditions to beat Ashleigh Barty in the 2020 Australian Open women's final.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet. Everything is just still a blur for me. I just can’t believe what happened … I feel like I’m doing some great things for American tennis. It’s such an honour," Kenin said.

“I’ve watched Serena (Williams). I’ve been following her, all the slams she’s been winning. It’s a special feeling just to be ahead of her. I’m just super excited. I can’t wait to compete, be on the same team with her in Fed Cup.”

1 - French Open

This is the second of the four annual Grand Slam tournaments and it remains the only major competition held on clay.

Also known as the Ronald Garros, the French Open is often considered to be the most physically demanding tennis tournament in the world.

There are seven rounds needed for a championship and there is also a slow-playing surface which makes it even more difficult for most players to hit winners

Furthermore, they are best-of-five-set men's singles matches, but one man has mastered the art of playing on clay surfaces having won a record 12 French Open titles and goes by the name - Rafael Nadal.
