Matchday 9

Getafe v Real Madrid

Estadio Coliseum

Getafe, Spain

Kick-off is at 21h00

Real Madrid will be looking to maintain their lead in La Liga when they make the short trip to the Coliseum for a local derby against Getafe on Sunday, October 19.

Los Blancos ultimately returned to the top of the table after beating Villarreal 3-1 on October 4, with arch-rivals Barcelona dropping three points in a shock 4-1 loss to Sevilla one day later.

Xabi Alonso's side had seen their perfect start to the season come to an end in disappointing fashion as they slumped to a 5-2 defeat against neighbours Atletico Madrid on September 27.

But Real gave the desired response at home to the Yellow Submarine and they went two points clear of the Blaugrana at the league summit.

The Azulones find themselves in a bit of a slump since winning their opening two games of the 2025-26 campaign, picking up just five points out of a possible 18.

A 2-1 reverse to Osasuna on October 3 extended their winless run to four matches and left Jose Bordalas' side in mid-table (11th), but just two points outside the European berths.

Their recent record against the Madrid giants makes for poor record though, as Getafe have lost their last seven derby encounters while scoring just one goal in the process.

Alonso reserved special praise for Vinicius Junior after he scored a brace against Villarreal and provided a threat through the 90 minutes.

"He had a very good game and played a decisive role, not only because of the first goal but also because of the mismatch we were getting through him," the Spaniard said.

"I like it when I see him smiling and enjoying himself. He came close to scoring a hat-trick and rounding off his game. I'm happy for him and for the team because we need everyone and we wanted to end this cycle on a high with today's victory.

"He also had a great game against Levante. He's a very important player for the team and the club because of his ability to create mismatches, what he generates and the difficulty he poses for the opposition."
