Red Bull Racing's Sergio Perez will be turning his focus to the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday, November 5 in his battle with Lewis Hamilton for the runner-up spot this season.

The Mexican made an impressive start to the 2023 campaign, finishing on the podium in four of the opening five races, which included victories in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

But his title challenge quickly faded due to inconsistency and driver error, with Perez only claiming another four podium finishes in the subsequent 14 rounds.

The 33-year-old was eager to impress in his home Grand Prix last time out, although his race ended in disaster after he crashed out on lap 1 in an attempt to overtake Ferrari's Charles Leclerc on the outside going into turn 1.

A second retirement in four races has allowed Hamilton to close within 20 points of him in third position after the Mercedes driver put on a fine display in Mexico City to take P2.

'Checo' was seen punching his steering wheel in the pits when the team informed him that his race was over and he admitted the move had been risky.

"I'm sad without a doubt because today was my opportunity," Perez told DAZN. "I had a very good start and I was only thinking of winning the race.

"I didn't want to be on the podium. I've been on the podium two years in a row. I saw the opportunity and I went for it. In hindsight, I took a risk, but if I had pulled it off I would have come out of Turn 1 in the lead.

"I didn't expect Charles to brake so late since he was the car in the middle. He had a lot less margin than Max, who was on the inside, and I was the one who could brake the latest because I was on the outside."

2023 Mexican Grand Prix results:

Winner: Max Verstappen - Red Bull Racing
Second Place: Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes
Third Place: Charles Leclerc - Ferrari
