Fernando Alonso will be hoping to win the Monaco Grand Prix title for the third time in his illustrious career.

What to know about Alonso

The Aston Martin driver is a two-time Formula One world champion having won the championship in 2005 and 2006.

Alonso won the championship while representing Renault, and has also driven for McLaren, Ferrari, and Minardi.

The Spanish star finished seventh in last year's Monaco Grand Prix having started seventh on the grid having started second on the grid.

Most recent race

Alonso scored his fourth podium in five races with a consummate performance at the 2023 Miami Grand Prix on May 7.

The race was won by Red Bull Racing-Honda RBPT's Max Verstappen as Alonso finished 26 seconds of the pace in P3.

The 41-year-old looks to be edging closer to recording his maiden win of the 2023 Formula One World Championship season.

Why Alonso could win the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix

The experienced racing driver, who is placed third on the World Drivers' Championship standings, is very much in the race for the title.

Alonso is also familiar with the Circuit de Monaco having won the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix as a Renault driver on the circuit.

He then won the 2007 Monaco Grand Prix with McLaren-Mercedes which makes him capable of winning this year's event.

What did he say?

“The car is amazing, and [it was] a little bit of a lonely race, today. Nothing really to do in front of us with the Red Bulls and behind us," Alonso said after the 2023 Miami Grand Prix.

"We did expect a little bit stronger opposition, but the Ferraris, they were a little bit worse than expected. It’s not easy, it’s never easy, but it was a lonely race.

“I think at the beginning of the year a podium was amazing; now after four podiums we obviously want more, at least a second place. But the two Red Bulls they are always unbreakable, and always super-fast," he continued.

"But as I said, maybe Monaco, maybe Barcelona we have a possibility. We take the podium going into the triple[-header], Imola, Monaco and Barcelona, which hopefully we can keep on going.”
