Ireland and Senegal will meet in senior
international football for the first time when they battle in a friendly at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on the evening of Friday 6 June, 2025. Kick-off is set for 20:45.
Ireland, who will kick-off their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign in September, come into this clash on the back of two wins in the UEFA Nations League in March, defeating Bulgaria 2-1 both home and away to retain their place in League B of the continental competition.
Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrímsson says he is happy not to be playing competitive matches in this June international window, believing that a delayed start to their 2026 qualification campaign could benefit them in the long run.
“The June window has not been successful for Ireland in the past, it's been a tricky window, not playing for a month and then coming in to the national team camp for a game that's maybe on a higher level than you play on a regular basis,” explained the Icelandic tactician.
“You are never 100 percent physically fit or mentally focussed after a holiday period, so yes, I am happy we are not playing World Cup group stage at this time.”
Senegal will also resume their World Cup qualifiers in September, and come into this match on a long unbeaten run (22 matches, including African Nations Championship fixtures), having not suffered an outright defeat since a 1-0 reverse at the hands of Algeria in a friendly in September 2023.
The Teranga Lions, however, will be without star man Sadio Mane, who requested to be left out of the June fixtures. Coach Pape Thiaw named one newcomer in his squad, RS Berkane’s Mamadou Lamine Camara, and recalled seven players, including Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson and Iliman Ndiaye from Everton.
“It’s a personal decision that is his private business, and I respect that as a coach,” Thiaw said in regards to Mane’s absence.
