2022/23 UEFA Nations League

League A - Group 2
Matchday 2

Switzerland v Spain

Stade de Geneve
Lancy, Switzerland
Thursday, 9 June 2022
Kick-off is at 20h45

Spain will targeting their first win in the UEFA Nations League when they take on Switzerland at the Stade de Geneve on matchday 3 in Group 2 on Thursday, June 9.

The 2020/21 losing finalists kicked off the third edition of the competition with back-to-back draws against Portugal (1-1) and the Czech Republic (2-2).

As a result, La Furia Roja trail their Iberian neighbours and the Czechs by two points in the group, which is propped up by the Swiss.

Sunday's stalemate with the Czech Republic extended their unbeaten run to six matches, but Luis Enrique sees room for improvement across the board.

"We improved in the second half but it's not enough," Enrique was quoted as saying by Marca. "However, we are not the only ones, I have already seen this happening in other national teams in this competition.

"We were never comfortable against a rival that caused us problems from the first minute. We have to improve on many things, including myself."

Switzerland have yet to pick up any points after being beaten 2-1 by the Czechs last week before crashing to a heavy 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Portuguese on Sunday.

Murat Yakin's team are winless since securing a place at the 2022 World Cup as winners of their qualifying group ahead of Italy.

They lost 2-1 to England and drew 1-1 with Kosovo during the previous international break, making it four games without a win this year.

Yakin expressed his disappointment with their defending against Portugal, but isn't concerned about the results with the World Cup just around the corner.

"I am very disappointed, of course. We had a plan but there was an adversary of great value in front, who played fast and fair. We defended badly," he said.

"We have to analyze everything now. React for the next two matches, Thursday and Sunday in Geneva. Our defensive positioning is a negative point, we were punished.

"But we have to do better, yes. That said, I'm not worried, no, I know the quality of the group, its potential."

Head-to-Head record:

Matches - 23
Switzerland - 1
Spain - 17
Draws - 5
