The English Premier League is one of the most popular sports leagues on the planet. It’s where the luminaries of football strut their stuff, whether they’re card carrying Brits or players from far flung nations like Zambia, Togo, Romania or the Ukraine.
Despite there being almost 100 professional football clubs in the two-tier English league system, only six have claimed the Premier League title since its inception in 1992. What’s even more remarkable is the likes of Liverpool, Everton and Spurs have failed in their quest for glory.
Here are the six English clubs that have dominated the league for more than a quarter of a century:
Manchester United
The Red Devils have racked up a record 13 league titles. Under the inimitable Scot, Sir Alex Ferguson they were virtually invincible. Along with their jaw dropping total title tally, the golden boys of Manchester United recorded back to back league final wins over three years… not once, but twice.
A flurry of new managers in the shape of David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and most recently Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put paid to their protracted winning streak. Although players of the calibre of Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez are part of the set up at Old Trafford, Manchester United is battling to regain the form of old and is currently placed a flailing fourth on the league table.
Chelsea
Eight titles separate Manchester United from runner up Chelsea, a legendary London club that managed to win the league five times. Ironically, The Pensioners had their most fruitful forays in the EPL under the same Jose Mourinho who failed to inspire Manchester United to bigger and better things.
They too have won consecutive titles on two occasions but the team under Maurizio Sarri is failing to fire. Chelsea are currently languishing in sixth place on the league table, 15 points short of table topper, Manchester City. Can Eden Hazard, N’Golo Kante, Cesar Azpilicueta and David Cahill turn Chelsea’s fortunes around?
Arsenal
The Gunners have won three Premier League titles, all under the tutelage of former French manager Arsene Wenger. During the height of their prowess Arsenal set a record for the longest unbeaten run in the top flight, winning 49 games on the trot.
Although talented players like Mesut Ozil, Lucas Torreira, Rob Holding and Aaron Ramsey are in the mix at the Emirates, it will take a minor miracle for fifth placed Arsenal under Unai Emery to rack up a fourth title win in 2018-19.
Manchester City
Under current manager Pep Guardiola, the Citizens are potentially on track to win a fourth league title. Although they are sharing the top points tally with Liverpool, they have scored 15 more goals than their closest rivals.
That, together with the record 100 league points they scored in the 2017-18, may just prove to be enough to see them through to back to back Premier League glory. Factor in the precocious talent of Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne and there’s a good chance City will march to the winner’s beat again in 2018-19.
Blackburn Rovers
The Blue and Whites won their one and only Premier League title 24 years ago under Kenny Dalgleish. Since then they have been relegated twice and are currently competing in the Championship.

Leicester City
Leicester City is another one-off wonder that lifted the silverware in the 2015-16 season under Claudio Ranieri. The Foxes’ current position on the league table (12) suggests they haven’t got a hope of transforming the King Power Stadium into a riot of celebration.
