Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas will be hoping to keep his hopes alive by clinching the Sakhir Grand Prix.

The Finnish driver's ambitions of finishing second on the 2020 Drivers' Championship standings are still alive.

This is despite Bottas having endured a disappointing race at the recent Bahrain Grand Prix where he finished eighth last weekend.

His teammate Lewis Hamilton won the race with Red Bull driver Max Verstappen securing a second spot finish.

Verstappen's teammate Alexander Albon finished third which was his second podium finish of the season.

Hamilton is at the top of the Drivers' Championship standings and he has already successfully defended his world title.

Bottas is still placed second on the standings, while Verstappen remains third on the table.

There is a 12-point gap between Bottas and Verstappen heading into the Sakhir Grand Prix as the battle for the runner-up spot continues.

Bottas suffered two punctures during the Bahrain Grand Prix on his way to eighth place and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has backed the 31-year-old to bounce back.

"Valtteri has had bad luck in his season that almost comes close to freak events. Multiple punctures that shouldn’t have happened, red flags when he was easily in the lead," Wolff said.

"And if I didn’t know that he has an absolutely strong mental constitution, a driver could start to question why that was happening to only one guy. But not Valtteri. He is so strong, so robust and resilient that it’s only going to make him stronger.

"But I feel sorry for him picking up all those problems in a single season when he could have won three or four or five races more, being a solid second at least. This is difficult."

Mercedes, who have been crowned 2020 Formula One world constructors champions, are placed at the top of the standings with an unassailable lead of 533 points.

They are followed by second-placed Red Bull and third-placed McLaren, who have accumulated 274 points and 171 points with two races left.
