Chelsea set for St James’ Park test

2019/20 Premier League

Round 23

18-19 January

Chelsea will be geared for a testing clash against Newcastle United when they head to St James’ Park on Saturday 18 January 2020, kick-off at 19:30. The match is one of 10 spread across the weekend of 18-19 January for the 23rd round of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham

Newcastle come into the match on the back of a creditable 1-1 draw away to Wolverhampton Wanderers this past weekend, with Miguel Almiron’s goal earning the Magpies a valuable point on the road in their mission to stay in the top flight.

Despite Newcastle reeling from an injury crisis, manager Steve Bruce insist the club cannot simply sign a slew of players to solve the problem: "I won't just sign bodies, if there is someone to help us and make us better we'll try that. It'll be wrong for the club just to sign bodies.”

Chelsea, meanwhile, shrugged off their recent struggles at home by thrashing Burnley 3-0, with Jorginho, Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi all scoring to see the Blues remain in fourth place, five points ahead of nearest chasers Manchester United.

“We know our home form wasn’t too great and we had to make it right,” said Abraham. “Coming off the back off Arsenal and drawing at Brighton, we knew we had to give a performance, especially for our home crowd, working hard every training day up to this game. It paid off.”

Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu

In head-to-head stats, Newcastle and Chelsea have met in 166 previous matches. The Blues have claimed 74 wins compared to 53 for the Magpies, while 39 games have been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, at Stamford Bridge in October 2019, Chelsea claimed a 1-0 home win thanks to a second-half strike from Marcos Alonso.
