Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas will be determined to clinch the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix title.

The Finnish driver's hopes of finishing second in the 2020 Formula One standings were dented after he came home in 14th spot at the recent Turkish Grand Prix.

Bottas will take a giant step towards clinching the runner-up position if he wins the Bahrain Grand Prix having finished second in the 2019 Formula One standings.

His teammate Lewis Hamilton won the recent Turkish Grand Prix and he was followed by Sergio Perez of Racing Point and Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel over the line.

Hamilton is placed at the top of the Drivers' Championship standings having successfully defended his Formula One world title.

Bottas is still placed second on the standings, while Red Bull driver Max Verstappen remains third on the table.

There is a 27-point gap between Bottas and Verstappen heading into the Bahrain Grand Prix as the battle for the runner-up spot continues.

Bottas explained that the damage he picked up led to a "disaster race" at the Turkish Grand Prix when speaking to Autosport.

"I had the spin in the first corner, I was avoiding one of the Renault spins, then I had the collision in Turn 9 on the first lap. The car was not right," Bottas said.

"I could feel that the steering wheel was going to the left on a straight line, and then in the left corners, the car was behaving differently, sliding. All the moments I had, it was not like how it should be.

"It was a messy race, a disastrous race. Obviously, I was trying to push as hard as I could, because there was nothing to lose for me today."

Mercedes, who have been crowned 2020 Formula One world constructors champions, are placed at the top of the standings with an unassailable lead of 504 points.

They are followed by second-placed Red Bull and third-placed Racing Point, who have accumulated 240 points and 154 points with three races remaining.

2019 Bahrain Grand Prix results:

Winner: Lewis Hamilton - Mercedes
Runner-Up: Valtteri Bottas - Mercedes
