The 2019 Australian Open Men’s Singles Final will be fought between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic at the Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne Park on Sunday 27 January.

Nadal, 32, won his only Australian Open title in 2009.

This final represents a continued domination for tennis’ ‘old guard’, but it may be one of the last to do so, as a new generation gave notice of their potential in the 2019 Australian Open – most notably the likes of Frances Tiafoe and Stefanos Tsitsipas (who defeated Roger Federer earlier in the week).

Both Nadal and Djokovic, who hold a combined 31 Grand Slam career titles, are into their thirties, but this tournament suggests they still have plenty of fight and desire to add to their outstanding legacies in the sport.

Nadal has confounded critics who suggested he would struggle under an injury cloud, not even dropping a set in defeating James Duckworth, Matthew Ebden, Alex De Minaur, Tomas Berdych, Frances Tiafoe and Stefanos Tsistipas thus far.

Djokovic, the number-one ranked player and top seed for the Australian Open, has ousted Mitchell Krueger, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Denis Shapovalov, Kei Nishikori (retired) and Lucas Pouille to give him a chance of winning a seventh title in Melbourne.

Djokovic, 31, is a six-time champion at Melbourne Park and last claimed the trophy in 2016

The players have met in one previous Australian Open final, an epic match in 2012 which Djokovic claimed after a marathon 5–7 6–4 6–2 6–7 (5-7) 7–5 score line.
