Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

23 July – 8 August 2021

The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games wrapped up this past weekend, bringing to an end over two weeks of world-class sporting action from a huge variety of disciplines in Japan’s capital city. We take a closer look at some of the more fascinating triumphs of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad.

In the Swimming events, one of the biggest stars of the Games was American Katie Ledecky, who won 1500m and 800m Freestyle Golds and Silvers in the 400m Freestyle and 4x200m Freestyle Relay, reaffirming her unique ability to compete over both long and short distances. She’s also a bona fide Olympics legend, now with 10 Medals to her name overall.

“(The medals) just represent a lot of hard work, not just for me, but for my family, my friends, my coaches, my teammates, just everyone that's been a part of this journey, not just the past five years, but my whole swimming career," said Ledecky.

“And it's an amazing feeling to be bringing home two golds and two silvers here and competing in my third Olympics. That's something I never would have imagined when I first started swimming.”

It wasn't all smooth-sailing in Tokyo for the 24-year-old American, as she faced stern competition from Australia's double Olympic Gold Medalist Ariarne Titmus and finished fifth in the 200m Freestyle.

Nonetheless, her resilience and resourcefulness – which included training in a backyard pool at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic – took her to new heights and has maintained a competitiveness which will see her compete again in Paris 2024.

“That was not my last swim,” Ledecky said after her 800m Freestyle triumph. “I’m at least going to ’24, maybe ’28. We’ll see. You never take anything for granted. You don’t know if you’re gonna be back at the next Olympics, so you just try to soak it all in.”
