Matchday 33

Everton v Newcastle United

Kick-off is at 20h45

Newcastle will be looking to build on their biggest win of the Premier League season when they travel to Goodison Park to take on relegation-threatened Everton on Thursday, April 27.

The Magpies thumped top-four hopefuls Tottenham 6-1 at St James' Park last Sunday to reclaim third place from Manchester United, who were involved in the FA Cup over the weekend.

Eddie Howe's side are tied with the Red Devils on 59 points but climbed above them on goal difference, although the Tynesiders have played one game more.

Spurs trail the duo by six points in fifth place and saw their faint top-four hopes drift further away following a second consecutive defeat, having won just one of their last five matches.

The Toffees slipped back into the relegation zone after a goalless draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park saw them pick up only their third point in five outings.

Sean Dyche's team will be desperate to arrest a five-game winless run which has sucked them back into the relegation mire but their recent record against the Toon isn't great.

The Merseysiders have only come out on top three times in the last 10 encounters between the two clubs, with Newcastle emerging victorious on five occasions.

Leicester's 2-1 win over Wolves took them back above Everton on goal difference, while Leeds (16th) are just one point ahead of them after suffering three successive defeats.

Dwight McNeil has earned the trust of Dyche, playing almost every minute since being reunited with the former Burnley manager at Goodison Park on January 30. The 23-year-old winger bagged his fourth goal of the season in the 3-1 loss to Fulham on April 15 to go with his two assists in 30 top-flight appearances.

Joelinton has become an integral part of the team this season under Howe, forming a formidable partnership with Alexander Isak in attack. The Brazilian surpassed his previous best tally of four goals in a season for the Magpies with his fifth against Spurs and is just three shy of equalling a career record of eight achieved at Rapid Vienna during the 2016-17 season.

In team news, the hosts must do without Mason Holgate (suspension), Andros Townsend (knee), Seamus Coleman (thigh), Ruben Vinagre (calf) and Bamidele Alli (groin), while Amadou Onana (groin) is rated doubtful. Emil Krafth (knee), Allan Saint-Maximin and Fabian Schar (both thigh) remain unavailable for the visitors.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin made his comeback against Palace after a 10-game absence and Dyche was delighted with his contribution but has pleaded for patience with the striker.

"The biggest thing from our point of view was to get him back as fit as he possibly can be," Dyche told evertontv. "His stats haven't always been where they need to be on his journey back in - he's maybe been put in early or wanted to be put in early.

"We've been as patient as we can with him and he's been terrific because it's not easy for him. He's been working so hard and he just got a little niggle and we had to go back to the beginning and start the process again but he's worked really hard and I'm really pleased."

Howe paid tribute to his players for giving the perfect response to what he described was their worst performance of the season when they lost 3-0 to Aston Villa the previous weekend.

"That's the reaction we wanted. I said before the game that it was about re-aligning our principles of play," he said.

"We want the high energy and intensity off the ball and then we want the calmness on it. We want progressive football so the lads have had to take on a lot of information but they're doing incredibly well.

"Since I walked through the door here, the players have responded so well to us and I can't thank them enough really."
