2025-26 UEFA Champions League
Semifinal, second leg
Arsenal v Atletico Madrid
Emirates Stadium, London
Tuesday 5 May, 21:00
Aggregate score: 1-1
Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are set for a tense battle when they meet in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semifinal tie, set for the Emirates Stadium in London on the evening of Tuesday 5 May 2026. Kick-off at 21:00.
The teams met in the first leg at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid last Wednesday. Arsenal claimed the lead just before the half-time interval via a penalty from Viktor Gyokeres. Atletico hit back via a penalty of their own, scored by Julian Alvarez in the 56th minute. The Gunners had another penalty awarded late in the game for a challenge on Eberechi Eze, but the spot kick was scratched off after a VAR review – leaving the tie delicately poised at 1-1.
The prize on offer for the winners (by outright aggregate score, or penalties if necessary) is a place in the UEFA Champions League final, set for the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary, on Saturday 30 May against either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich.
While Arsenal are looking to return to the Champions League final for just the second time (having first appeared in the title match in the 2005-06 edition when they were defeated by Barcelona), Atletico are looking to reach the Champions League final for the fourth time – though their three previous appearances (1973-74, 2013-14 and 2015-16) have all ended in defeat.
Arsenal will be without Mikel Merino (foot) and Jurrien Timber (groin) due to injury, while Kai Havertz (muscular) and Martin Odegaard (knee) are doubtful. As for Atletico, Pablo Barrios (thigh), Jose Maria Giménez (muscular) and Nicolas González (thigh) are unavailable due to injury, while Alexander Sorloth is doubtful due to a hamstring strain.
“We want to reach the final. I've prepared a lot for this match and the one in London, and hopefully we can make it to the final,” said Atletico forward Antoine Griezmann, who will leave the club at the end of the season and would love to sign off by helping the Rojiblancos win a first Champions League title.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, is happy that the decisive leg will be played on their home soil in London: “We are in an incredible position – the semi-final of the Champions League. We have to play in front of our people – it's in our hands.”
