2025-26 Spanish La Liga

Matchday 21

Sevilla v Athletic Bilbao

Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan

Seville, Spain

Saturday, 24 January 2026

Kick-off is at 19h30

Athletic Bilbao will be desperate to halt their poor run of form when they make the long journey to the south of Spain to face Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan on Saturday, January 24.

The Lions just haven't managed to get going this season after achieving their best finish of fourth in La Liga for over a decade last term to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Ernesto Valverde's side have only won seven of their opening 20 matches and a disappointing 3-2 defeat against Real Mallorca on January 17 continued their winless start to 2026.

Athletic find themselves a massive 17 points adrift of the top four in 10th place after recording just three wins in their last 10 league outings.

The Palanganas only barely avoided relegation in 2024-25 and results haven't been much better this season as they've slowly began to slide down the table.

A 1-1 draw with Elche on January 19 arrested a three-game losing streak, but they're only two points clear of danger in 14th position after winning just two of their last 10 matches.

Matias Almeyda's side haven't fared particularly well against the Basque outfit. losing four of their last five meetings and collecting just one point along the way - a 1-1 draw at San Mames on 29 September 2024.

Valverde admitted some of the refereeing decisions were questionable in Palma, but believes his team can turn their fortunes around if they keep playing with the same intensity during the second half of the campaign.

"It's a very frustrating result for us, given how the match went," he said. "We recovered after their first goal, we were close to making it 1-2, and then came [Dani] Vivian's penalty.

"We protested a lot because we didn't think it was a handball. We still managed to equalise and just when we had the game under control, we were reduced to 10 men.

"We've been doing well. But the reality is that we don't have the points we'd like to have. If keeping playing like we did today, with this intensity, we'll have a better chances."
