Matchday 23

Athletic Bilbao v Levante

Athletic Bilbao have the perfect opportunity to stop the rot when they welcome relegation-threatened Levante to San Mames on Sunday, February 8.

The Lions have really struggled for results this season and they remain winless in the new year after battling back from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with local rivals Real Sociedad on February 1.

In fact, Ernesto Valverde's side have gone six games without a win since they edged Atletico Madrid 1-0 on December 6 which was only their seventh victory of the campaign.

The Basque outfit are languishing down in 11th place, a massive 17 points outside the UEFA Champions League berths and just four above the relegation zone.

The Frogs have improved under Luis Castro, who has only lost one of his opening five matches since replacing Julian Calero at the helm on December 20.

Castro's side held Atleti to a surprise 0-0 draw on January 31 and they've now picked up eight points out of a possible 15 with the Portuguese as head coach.

Levante find themselves just four points shy of safety in 19th position with a game in hand on Rayo Vallecano (17th), who suffered a third straight defeat on matchday 22.

Valverde expressed his relief after seeing Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta score an 88th-minute equaliser against Erreala and hailed the persistence of his players to get something out of the contest.

"We are a team with a lot of drive. Perhaps in the first half we lacked a little more composure, we needed to move the ball more cleanly," he said.

"We often achieve things through persistence, it's one of our strengths. The things we have achieved are down to our spirit.

"Today there were moments when Real Sociedad were better than us. We drew, but I'm not going to say we're happy. We felt relieved to have managed to equalise."
