Friday evening’s
action in Serie A will see Chievo welcoming Roma to the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi in what appears to be a serious mismatch. L Gialloblu currently occupy the last spot in Italy’s top-flight while their opposition from the capital currently sit seventh, embroiled in a battle for the coveted European places with just nine points separating Inter Milan in third and Torino in tenth.
Chievo have had a dismal campaign thus far and would require nothing short of divine intervention to help save them from the despair of relegation. The Yellow and Blues have just nine points to their name and are a further nine from safety. A victory for manager Domenico di Carlo’s side on Friday would double their ‘wins’ tally for the entire season after registering their first maximum haul by beating Frosinone 1-0 at home in their final game back in December. They snapped a two-game losing run last time out, picking up their first points of 2019 in a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Empoli.

After a strong start to the calendar year, Roma were rocked with three successive knockout blows. First they capitulated at Atalanta, throwing away a 3-0 lead in the first half, eventually settling for a share of the spoils before Eusebio di Francesco’s men were then dumped out of the Coppa Italia in astounding fashion courtesy of a 7-1 hammering at Fiorentina. L Giallorossi are now without a win in their last three matches in all competitions following last weekend’s come-from-behind 1-1 draw at home with AC Milan.

When the pair met at the Stadio Olimpico in the reverse fixture back in September, Chievo picked up a precious point when they clawed themselves back from two-goals down to secure a 2-2 draw thanks to second-half strikes from Valter Birsa and Mariusz Stepinski after Stephan El Shaarawy and Bryan Cristante had given the hosts a 2-0 lead inside 30 minutes.
El Shaarawy has been in fine form this season and is Roma’s leading scorer having found the back of the net seven times in Serie A.
All eyes will be on talented 19-year-old Italian Nicola Zaniolo, who bagged the equaliser in that draw against AC Milan – his third goal for the club since joining from Inter in the summer.
Roma have won just once on their previous four visits to the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi – a thrilling 5-3 victory in May 2017 in which El Shaarawy scored twice – although Chievo have not beaten Roma in any of their last 11 attempts since recording a famous 1-0 win in Rome in May 2013.
