After seeing of Sorona Cirstea en-route to the US Open quarter-finals, third-seeded Jessica Pegula and 27th ranked Emma Navarro will battle it out for a spot in the competition’s semi-finals on Tuesday.
The American was scheduled to take on Cirstea during the Round of 16 and came away with a 6-3, 6-4 win over the Romanian at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Sunday.
Pegula has been one of the most prolific tennis players this season and subsequently claimed her 49th win during her match against Cirstea, more than any other player on the WTA tour so far.
While Pegula needed 90 minutes to dispatch the world number 17, Navarro wasted no time in beating Anna Kalinskaya 6-4, 6-2 in their respective last 16 fixture on Monday.
With Pegula reaching her fifth quarter-final of a major event, the 32-year-old was full of praise of Cirstea after the match, with the latter set to call time on her career at the end of the season.
“I just told her, I don’t know if you’re still going to play next year, but you’re playing great. I just said I have a lot of respect for you,” Pegula said.
“I always think that she’s just kind of the utmost professional and has always been super nice. She’s a few years older than me, but I feel like I’ve known her on tour for so long.”
