FIVE of the most surprising managerial sackings

Some football club owners/bosses can be more difficult to please than others, just ask any manager that has coached either Al Ahly or Zamalek over the last two decades.

In Europe, clubs like Chelsea and Real Madrid have gained reputations of being quick to pull the trigger and while coaches receiving the sack is nothing new to modern day football, there are still surprises along the way.

Betway takes a look at FIVE of the most surprising football managerial sackings of the last 20 years:

Claudio Ranieri (Leicester City, February 2017)

Winning the English Premier League title is one thing, but winning it at 5000-1 odds is a completely different ball game! Claudio Ranieri's Leicester City achieved the unthinkable in 2016 as they beat out Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United to be crowned league champions.

You'd think that achieving the impossible should buy you extra time, but just nine months after his historic achievement, the Foxes boss was sacked with the club just a point above the relegation zone.

Roberto Di Matteo (Chelsea , November 2012)

Losing your job as Chelsea boss isn't something out of the ordinary, especially not since Roman Abramovich took charge of the club, but having guided the Blues to two trophies as caretaker coach one could understand if Di Matteo harboured some objections.

The former midfielder took over the reins following the dismissal of Andre Villas-Boas in March 2012 and within no time he led the club to FA Cup and more importantly UEFA Champions league success. He was given the permanent job in June, but sacked in November!

Ruud Krol (Orlando Pirates, June 2011)

The Dutch footballing legend took some time to warm up to the Orlando Pirates hot seat but it all finally came together - in some style - during what proved to be his final season at the club.

Krol won an unprecedented treble with the Buccaneers in the 2010/11 season: leading the club to MTN8, Absa Premiership and Nedbank Cup while they lost in the final of the Telkom Knockout Cup to Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs. Despite all his success, he wasn't offered a new contract and Julio Leal was duly brought in to replace him.

Carlo Ancelotti (Chelsea and Real Madrid, May 2011 and May 2015)

A superb player and even better manager, Ancelotti was on the wrong end of some surprising sackings during the course of his successful managerial career. The Italian was relieved of his duties as Chelsea boss in May 2011 despite leading the club to a league and FA Cup double the season prior.

The madness continued in Madrid - who themselves are no stranger to pulling the trigger (just ask Vicente Del Bosque) - where he was given the boot following two years in charge after winning four trophies during that time period, including Los Blancos' first UEFA Champions League title in 12 years.

Roberto Mancini (Inter, May 2008)

Inter became the dominant team in Italy under Mancini during his four years at the San Siro. AC Milan and Juventus' dominance had meant that the club hadn't won a league crown for 17 years but he changed all that, leading Inter to three consecutive Serie A titles.

Juventus' embroilment in the Italian Football scandal helped pave the way for Mancini, but he was successful nonetheless and also steered the club to two Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana titles. Despite a haul of seven trophies in four years, Mancini was sacked and replaced by Jose Mourinho who would win two more league trophies and more importantly, the UEFA Champions League.
