Team Dimension Data will look to make a major impact at the
2019 Tour de France, when the 106
th edition of the world’s most famous cycling race gets underway on Saturday July 6.
The South African team surprisingly dropped Mark Cavendish for the TDF, instead opting for a squad of Edvald Boasson Hagen, Stephen Cummings, Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg, Michael Valgren, Roman Kreuziger, Giacomo Nizzolo, Ben King, and Lars Bak.
Cavendish has struggled for top form in recent years while suffering from the Epstein Barr virus, but had been optimistic about his fitness leading into the event.
The 34-year-old has 30 TDF stage wins to his name, just four behind the record held by the great Eddy Merckx, though he will not be eclipsing that mark this year.
The start of the 2019 Tour (known as the Grand Départ) will be in Brussels in honour of the 50th anniversary of the first Tour de France win of Merckx.
The 100th anniversary of the yellow jersey will be celebrated on 19 July. Throughout the race, an individual jersey design will be issued for each day's race leader.
