Saints look to sink the Clarets

2019/20 Premier League

Round 26, part II

14-17 February 2020

Southampton will look for a rise up the log standings with a home win over Burnley at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday 15 February 2020, kick-off at 14:30. The match is one of six spread from 14 to 17 February to complete the 26th round of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche

Southampton’s last Premier League outing was a 4-0 loss away to leaders Liverpool, which was then followed by a 3-2 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup. The Saints performed strongly in both matches, but were ultimately outclassed.

“It would be nice to have a break with a win, knowing we are going to the next round,” said manger Ralph Hasenhuttl after the cup defeat. “We didn’t, which is a pity, but we still try to recover and recharge the batteries. We must use it now to come back in better shape. It is important to bring back the players in the shape that they can play 90 minutes like we want to.”

Burnley, meanwhile, held Arsenal 0-0 at home in their last Premier League outing, continuing a recent uptick in form which has gone a long way in easing fears of being drawn into the relegation battle.

“Three very good sides and we have taken seven points from that and the players deserve it – they have worked very hard to, not turn things around as we were not a million miles away, but to turn the key moments in a game our way,” said manager Sean Dyche.

In head-to-head stats, Southampton and Burnley have met in 59 previous matches. The Clarets have claimed 22 wins compared to 20 for the Saints, while 17 games have been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, at Turf Moor in August 2019, Burnley claimed a 3-0 home win thanks to goals from Ashley Barnes (two) and Johann Berg Gudmundsson.
