Man United, Wolves meet again

2019/20 Premier League

Round 25

1-2 February 2020

Fresh from facing each other twice in the FA Cup in recent weeks, Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers will renew their rivalry with a league match at Old Trafford on Saturday 1 February 2020, kick-off at 19:30. The match is one of 10 spread across the weekend of 1-2 February for the 25th round of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

Man United returned to form with an emphatic 6-0 away win over lower league Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup on Sunday, though that has only slightly raised morale after back-to-back Premier League losses to Liverpool and Burnley.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists he does not fear the sack despite his side’s struggles to challenge for the upper reaches of the log table: “I don’t know what you’ve said and written," he said. "You can see everyone wanted us to fail but it doesn’t bother me. I can’t be up and down [emotionally]. I’m happy but won’t relax. Two big games coming up.”

Wolves had the weekend off (thanks to being eliminated by United in the previous round of the FA Cup) though they were in action last midweek and suffered a narrow 2-1 loss at home to Liverpool.

“It was a good game. We played well. There is nothing to be disappointed about. Getting the momentum was important,” said manager Nuno Espirito Santo. “We defended well, we were well organised. We have to look at that [conceding a set-piece].

“This is what we want. We want to compete and keep on growing. We had in the last moment of the game [the chance to equalise]. It’s about creating. Things will come naturally. I’m happy when we perform well. We faced a fantastic team. This is the standards we want.”

In head-to-head stats, Man United and Wolverhampton have met in 104 previous matches. The Red Devils have claimed 49 wins compared to 36 for Wolves, while 19 games have been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, at Molineux Stadium in August 2019, they played out a 1-1 draw: Anthony Martial put the visitors ahead, but Wolves struck back through Ruben Neves.
