The defending league champions head into the tie on a three-game winless run which has opened the door for United who could be the new Premier League leaders once they travel to Merseyside this weekend.

Liverpool lost 1-0 away to Southampton in their most recent league fixture and head into the week tied on 33 points with United atop the league standings, but ahead of their rivals on goal difference.

The Red Devils, who are unbeaten in 10 league matches, are away to Burnley on Tuesday evening before making the trip to Anfield on Sunday but despite the allure of going to Liverpool as league leaders, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is mindful of the fact that the season has yet to reach its halfway point.

"We're not even halfway through the season yet," Solskjaer said. "Every game in the Premier League is a challenge, is a test. Every game gives you a different test.

"Watford gave us a test (in the FA Cup). Burnley is one test, Liverpool is another, then you go to Fulham, which is a different test again.

"No one will remember how the league table looked like on Jan. 12 2021."

Liverpool took four points off United on their way to being crowned league champions last season. A 1-1 draw at Old Trafford was followed by a 2-0 win at Anfield for the Reds who scored through Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.
