Zambia, the 2012 AFCON champions, embarks on their
2023 Africa Cup Of Nations journey in Ivory Coast today, clashing with neighbours DR Congo in the evening.
The last AFCON appearance for Zambia in 2015 saw them draw 1-1 with DR Congo in the group stage. Unfortunately, Zambia finished fourth in the group, exiting after two draws and a loss to Tunisia, with another draw against Cape Verde.
Having faced DR Congo 12 times, Zambia experienced their first loss in 1969 in a friendly match, losing 10-1. Another defeat occurred on November 6, 2015, in another friendly. However, Zambia has turned the tide, won four times and drawing six times in subsequent encounters.
Coach Avram Grant, in a pre-match press conference, emphasized the importance of a strong start in Group F against DR Congo to set the tone for the tournament. Grant expressed confidence in Zambia's balanced and cohesive team.
‘’We are in a tough group and our first match is against a very good team but our target is to show progress as a good team. Winning will set a good tone for us, give us confidence going into the next match.’’
Chipolopolo captain Lubambo Musonda echoed the sentiment, stressing the significance of a positive start and the team's commitment to working hard for success.
‘’We are ready to fight for the badge as it is important that we start on a good note in the first game.
Despite the anticipation, the team carries a somber note as player Enock Mwepu, who started the qualifiers, is absent due to a heart condition. The team remains hopeful and supportive, keeping Mwepu in their thoughts and prayers.
Zambia is in the same group with Tanzania, Morocco as well as DR Congo whom they play today at the Laurent Pokou at 22:00 hours (Zambian Time), aiming for a promising start to their AFCON campaign.
