2025-26 Spanish La Liga

Matchday 16

Celta Vigo v Athletic Bilbao

Estadio Balaidos

Vigo, Spain

Sunday, 14 December 2025

Kick-off is at 17h15

Athletic Bilbao will be wary of the threat posed by Celta Vigo when they come face-to-face at Balaidos on Sunday, December 14.

The Sky Blues are brimming with confidence after they pulled off a shock 2-0 victory against Real Madrid on December 7, having bounced back from a 1-0 defeat to Espanyol.

It was a fourth win in six games for Claudio Giraldez's side, who have started to gain momentum after a slow start to the season which saw them go winless in their opening nine matches.

Celta are now on the verge of breaking into the top 10 as they're tied with Elche (10th) on 19 points in 11th place and have improved their goal difference to -1.

Results just haven't gone the Lions' way this term as they've already lost seven times - one more than the entirety of the 2024-25 campaign when they finished fourth.

Ernesto Valverde's side did manage to claim a morale-boosting 1-0 win against Atletico Madrid last time out which lifted them up to seventh position, although they are still some eight points adrift of the UEFA Champions League berths.

Valverde described Athletic's performance against Los Colchoneros as "perfect" and hopes it will give his players the confidence to turn their fortunes around in the league.

"We wanted to produce a display like this," the Spaniard said. "We played with intensity and we knew winning was a must for us.

"We needed to feel like we were back on track and today we did that from the very beginning. It was a perfect match. We kept pushing and it went our way.

"We needed a victory here at San Mames, for our fans. We've been on a losing streak and, despite the injuries we have, we played a great game and we want this victory to give us momentum.

"If we continue with this intensity, we know that many matches will go our way. We always seek results through our performances."
