Brighton, Palace renew ‘A23-M23 derby’

2019/20 Premier League

Round 28

28 February – 1 March 2020

Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace will renew their ‘A23-M23 derby’ (named for the roads linking South London with Sussex) when they meet at the AmEx Stadium on Saturday 29 February 2020, kick-off at 14:30.

The match is one of eight spread from 28 February to 1 March for the 28th round of the 2019/20 Premier League season, with two fixtures postponed due to the League Cup final between Manchester City and Aston Villa.

Palace winger Wilfried Zaha

Brighton come into the clash on the back of a 1-1 draw away to Sheffield United last weekend, with Neal Maupay scoring for the Seagulls to secure a valuable away point.

“We fought, we battled, we didn’t pay as well as we have but I think we have played better and lost,” said manager Graham Potter. “We are at a stage of the season where we are fighting for everything and it was important we showed those qualities.”

Palace, meanwhile, secured a vital 1-0 home win over Newcastle United – with a great strike direct from a free kick by Patrick van Aanholt – to halt their slide toward the relegation zone.

We dominated the game but I am disappointed we had to suffer towards the end,” said manager Roy Hodgson. “When it’s 1-0 they are never out of the picture. It’s our first win in 2020.

It was vitally important and had we conceded in the last few minutes it would have been disastrous.”

In head-to-head stats, Brighton and Palace have met in 102 previous matches. The Seagulls have claimed 40 wins compared to 36 for the Eagles, while 26 games have been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, at Selhurst Park in December 2019, they played out a 1-1 draw, with goals from Wilfried Zaha (Palace) and Neal Maupay (Brighton).
