Matchday 36

Celta Vigo v Levante

Kick-off is at 19h00

Celta Vigo suddenly have something more to play for as they prepare to welcome relegation-threatened Levante to Balaidos on Tuesday, May 12.

Spain were awarded an additional UEFA Champions League berth this month due to their coefficient points in Europe this season, meaning that Barcelona, Real Madrid, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid will be joined by another rival in the competition.

Real Betis are the current beneficiaries, but they find themselves in a race with the Sky Blues for a top-five finish with three games remaining.

Claudio Giraldez's side further boosted their European ambitions with a 1-0 victory over Atleti on May 9, having arrested a three-match losing streak when they beat Elche 3-1 six days earlier.

Celta have only ever qualified for the UEFA Champions League once, back in 2002-03 when they finished fourth, and they gained ground on Betis, who saw the gap to sixth spot reduced to four points with a 2-2 draw against Real Sociedad on May 9.

The Frogs were the biggest winners of the bottom-seven teams after they beat Osasuna 3-2 on May 8 to close within two points of safety in 19th position.

Just three points separate Espanyol in 14th place and Luís Castro's side, who saw all five clubs above them drop points on matchday 35.

Giraldez wants to collect as many points as possible to ramp up the pressure on Betis and he's relishing the prospect of competing in Europe again, be it in the Champions League or Europa League.

"I have already said a few weeks ago that we are incredibly excited to be able to return to Europe, to be able to proudly display our badge in Europe again," he said.

"And to be the second generation to achieve this feat of being there two years in a row is very difficult. I think we shouldn't normalise it and we have to try to learn from the mistakes we've made this year [in the Europa League].

"We have three games left to keep adding points and try to fight to get as many as possible out of the nine that remain, and what better way to do it than in front of our fans against Levante."
