As regular campaigners for a high placing on the La Liga table, Atletico Madrid are among the in-form teams following Matchday 26 as the club prepares to take on Real Sociedad this weekend.
Atleti are currently third on the league standings, having taken 51 points from 26 games played so far. The Spanish giants secured a 1-0 win against Real Oviedo in their most recent outing, recording two successive victories.
Overall, Atletico Madrid recorded two wins, two losses and one draw in their last five La Liga ties, while Sociedad noted two victories, two draws, and one loss during the same number of games.
Sociedad recorded a 1-0 win against Mallorca this past weekend, taking their tally to 35 points from 26 games in eighth position on the log.
While Atletico are on course to finish within a European spot for next season, La Real are currently five points away from sixth place, a position occupied by Celta Vigo.
Reflecting on Atletico’s win over Real Oviedo, coach Diego Simeone encouraged his side to remain focused and not fall too far behind teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona.
“We scored an important goal in a tough match against a team that desperately needed points,” Simeone said.
“We grew into the game, had a strong second half, and scored a beautiful goal that will benefit Julian Alvarez and the team.”
“It was important not to fall behind the teams above us. We are aiming for consistency in La Liga to stay competitive.”
