London, England
3–16 July 2023

No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev will look to continue his challenge for a first-ever Wimbledon title when he meets Christopher Eubanks in the quarter-finals.

The Russian has already surpassed his previous best showing on the London grass by progressing beyond the fourth round after Jiri Lehecka retired two sets into their match.

Medvedev reached the same stage at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in 2021 for the first time after failing to go further than the third round in four prior attempts.

The world No. 3 comfortably beat Arthur Fery (7-5, 6-4, 6-3) and Andrian Mannarino (6-3, 6-3, 7-6) in the opening two rounds before dropping his first set in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Marton Fucsovics.

He was leading 6-4, 6-2 against Lehecka before the Czech called it quits, having already called a medical timeout earlier in the contest.

Medvedev admitted to being surprised when his opponent retired and wished him a speedy recovery after an impressive run which saw Lehecka knock out the 18th-seeded Francisco Cerundolo and 16th-seeded Tommy Paul.

"Well I honestly didn't know 'til he retired, I mean I saw that maybe his movement is a little bit restricted but the way that he hits strong the ball, I thought that it's not gonna cause him enough trouble," the 27-year-old said afterwards.

"But then when he retired I was like, 'Okay, I see it different'. But yeah, during the match unfortunately you don't have any other choice than fight for every point take them on. Because how many times - even with me it happened - you think you're injured then you win one game, one break, you're like, 'Okay, maybe I should continue playing'.

"And then you win the match. So you have to fight until the last point. Of course I feel sorry for Jiri because fourth round of Wimbledon to get hurt, it's not easy. Hopefully he can recover fast and he has a lot of more Grand Slams to come ahead of him."
