Halep leads women’s field into Australian Open

2019 Australian Open

14-27 January 2019

Melbourne Park, Victoria, Australia

Top seeds Simona Halep and Novak Djokovic headline the women’s and men’s singles tournaments respectively as the 2019 Australian Open gets underway on Monday, 14 January.

Halep, who finally claimed her first Grand Slam title (the French Open) last year and was the runner-up in the 2018 Australia Open, will be keen to triumph on the blue courts of Melbourne Park.

Roger Federer won the 2018 Australian Open and will be a major contender again.

Yet she will face stiff competition from the likes of defending champion Caroline Wozniacki, Noami Osaka, German left-hander Angelique Kerber and veteran Serena Williams, who is looking to redeem herself after her meltdown at the US Open final.

Yet top-ranked Novak Djokovic is the favourite to win a third straight Grand Slam (after triumphs in Wimbledon and the US Open last year), while Rafael Nadal (if he can keep fit) is always a threat.

In addition, South Africa’s Kevin Anderson and rising stars such as Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem and Kei Nishikori will hope to usher in a new era and triumph for the first time at Melbourne.
