Serena Williams has never been short of unforgettable chapters, but her latest return to the US Open stage may be one of the most surprising yet.
Four years after she appeared to bring her groundbreaking playing career to a close at the 2022 US Open, Williams is back in New York. This time, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion will compete in the 2026 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship presented by Vital Proteins alongside Carlos Alcaraz, with the pair scheduled to take the court during US Open Fan Week.
For Williams, it represents another remarkable comeback. Less than two months after making a stunning return to Grand Slam competition at Wimbledon, the six-time US Open singles champion is preparing to chase a second mixed doubles crown at Flushing Meadows. Her first came way back in 1998, making this latest appearance an extraordinary 28 years after that triumph.
Williams' return is also a reminder of the extraordinary impact she has had on tennis. Alongside her sister Venus, who has accepted a wild card into the US Open singles main draw, Serena helped transform the sport, challenging perceptions about athleticism, competitiveness and diversity while becoming one of the most influential athletes of her generation.
The numbers tell only part of the story. Williams spent 319 weeks at No. 1, reached nine Grand Slam singles finals against Venus and won 10 major singles titles after turning 30. She also claimed two “Serena Slams” and owns the longest span between her first and most recent US Open singles titles.
Her first came as a 17-year-old in 1999, when she defeated Martina Hingis in straight sets to announce herself as a major force in women's tennis. Twenty-seven years later, she returns to the same tournament as a global icon whose influence extends far beyond the court.
Partnering Alcaraz adds another intriguing dimension to the occasion. One of the defining champions of the modern men's game alongside one of tennis' greatest-ever legends, their mixed doubles partnership promises to be one of the headline attractions of Fan Week.
The competitive stakes may be different from those of Serena's greatest singles battles, but the significance is unmistakable. Once again, under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium, Serena Williams is giving tennis fans the chance to say something they have been fortunate enough to say many times before: “I saw it at the US Open.”
