28th Season

Matches Played: 380
Goals Scored: 1034

The 2019/20 season saw newly promoted teams Sheffield United and Aston Villa punch above their weight in the Premier League.

Sheffield made history as they conceded the fewest goals by a promoted club as they let in just 39 on their return to the competition.

The Blades also became the first-ever promoted team to avoid defeat in their first nine away matches of a season.

The nine-match unbeaten run on the road included three wins over Everton FC, Brighton and Hove Albion, and fellow newly-promoted side Norwich City.

Meanwhile, Villa made history when they secured a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at their historic home ground, Villa Park on 12th July 2020.

The Lions became the first side to win on all seven days of the week in a single campaign in the history of the Premier League.

They also became only the second side to achieve this in an English top-flight campaign after Tottenham Hotspur in 1986/87 season.

Dean Smith, the Villa manager, reflected on their 2019/20 season which saw them avoid relegation back to the English Championship.

"I feel better than I did after getting us promoted last year in the play-offs, and that’s the honest truth. It’s been a tough season but a really enjoyable one. I’ve learned a lot, about myself, about the players," Smith said.

“It’s a magnificent achievement, it shouldn’t be overlooked. Whether we got relegated or stayed up, my words would have been the same. We had a big turnaround in the summer and we had to rebuild the squad, made 12 changes.

Villa captain Jack Grealish was the most fouls on a player as the attacking midfielder impressed on his return to the most prestigious league in the United Kingdom (UK).

The England international was fouled 167 times during the campaign which is the most in a season since records began in 1998/99.

Lastly, Norwich also impressed despite being relegated back to the English Championship at the end of the term.

Their star striker Teemu Pukki began the season very well as he netted once against Liverpool FC, before grabbing a hat-trick against Newcastle United in August 2019.

As a result, the Finland international became the first player to score as many as four goals in his first two appearances in the Premier League.

His teammate Emiliano Buendia had a memorable debut season in the English top-flight league as Norwich's chief orchestrator.

The Argentine playmaker created 29 goalscoring chances in December 2019, the most by a player in a single calendar month since such data became available in 2003/04.
