2022/23 English Premier League

Matchday 9

Arsenal v Tottenham Hotspur

Emirates Stadium
London, England
Saturday, 1 October 2022
Kick-off is at 13h30

Arsenal will be looking to retain top spot in the Premier League when they lock horns with fierce rivals Tottenham in the 192nd North London derby on Saturday, October 1.

The Gunners saw their 100 per cent record come to an end with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester United on matchday 7, but they returned to winning ways by beating Brentford 3-0 prior to the international break.

Goals from William Saliba (17'), Gabriel Jesus (28') and Fabio Vieira (49') saw Mikel Arteta's side move back to the summit as they went one point clear of Manchester City and Spurs in the standings.

They are undefeated in 11 home games against the Lilywhites, who last won at the Emirates Stadium in the top flight on 20 November 2010 under the guidance of Harry Redknapp.

Arteta wants his players to show they are serious contenders for the title this term by keeping the pressure on their rivals week in, week out.

"Today we are top of the league, I am so happy, yesterday I was annoyed because we lost it and we used that today as we want to get back there and show that we want to be there and that’s what we're going to do," the Spaniard said after the win over the Bees.

"Push to be the best that we can be and that's the aim and then the table won't lie after 38 games."

Spurs maintained their unbeaten start to the season as they thrashed rock-bottom Leicester 6-2 in the capital last time out, with Son Heung-Min stepping off the bench to score a second-half hat-trick.

It was Son's first league goals of the campaign since being crowned the Golden Boot winner for 2021/22 and he received high praise from head coach Antonio Conte.

"It was a record for me, for sure. It's the first time with a substitution and a player coming in to score a hat-trick," Conte told SPURSPLAY. "First of all, I'm happy for Sonny, because he needed to score.

"In the end, a striker has to score because, when you don't score, the confidence goes down. This is the truth. I'm happy for him because he scored three goals.

"Sonny, you know what I think about him. He deserved to have a bit of rest in the same way in that, in the first four games, it happened for Richarlison, in the last three, [Dejan] Kulusevski. This time, it was important for Sonny to rest a bit, then come in."
