Lewis Hamilton will look to reclaim the initiative in the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship when Round 15, the Russian Grand Prix, is held at the Sochi Autodrom on the afternoon of Sunday 26 September.

Hamilton has won just once in the last 10 F1 races, though he is only five points adrift of Drivers’ Championship leader Max Verstappen. The British pilot and the Dutchman collided in the previous round in Italy, forcing both out of the race, with the Red Bull even making contact with Hamilton’s helmet in the course of the incident.

This was a major missed opportunity for Hamilton to possibly reclaim the Championship lead, given that his Mercedes enjoyed a clear speed advantage over the Red Bull Racing-Honda at Monza – something that may not be replicated as strongly at Sochi.

Yet with Verstappen hit with a three-place grid penalty for this upcoming race, the Mercedes man will have another chance to strike a key blow in the title race. The seven-time F1 World Champion said he strongly agreed with the decision to punish his rival.

“If that’s the result then I think I’m ultimately proud of the stewards,” Hamilton stated “It definitely sets a precedent and I think it’s important for us moving forwards for the safety of the drivers that there are strict rules set in place.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been hit on the head by a car before and it’s quite a shock for me because if you’ve seen the image, my head really is quite far forward. I’ve been racing a long, long time, so I’m so grateful I’m still here and I feel incredibly blessed. I feel like somebody was watching over me.”
