How to play Baccarat

Baccarat is a casino card game played between two hands known as the Player and Banker. Before the cards are dealt, players predict whether the Player hand will win, the Banker hand will win or the two hands will finish with the same total, known as a Tie.

Despite their names, players do not control either hand. Choosing the Banker bet does not mean acting as the dealer or casino. The Player and Banker labels simply identify the two hands used in the game.
The basic objective is straightforward: predict which hand will finish with a total closest to nine.

What Is the Objective of Baccarat?
The aim of baccarat is to predict which hand will finish closest to nine.
There are three main possible outcomes:
  • The Player hand wins.
  • The Banker hand wins.
  • Both hands finish with the same total, resulting in a Tie.
A hand does not need to score exactly nine to win. It simply needs to finish closer to nine than the other hand.
For example, if the Player hand finishes with seven and the Banker hand has five, the Player wins. If the Player has four and the Banker has eight, the Banker wins.

Baccarat Card Values
Baccarat has a simple card-value system:
  • Ace: Worth 1 point.
  • Cards 2 to 9: Worth their displayed value.
  • 10, Jack, Queen and King: Worth 0 points.
  • Suits: Do not affect the value of a hand.
When the cards total 10 or more, only the final digit counts.
For example:
  • A 4 and a 3 make a total of 7.
  • A 7 and an 8 add up to 15, so the hand is worth 5.
  • A 9 and a King make a total of 9, because the King is worth zero.
The highest possible baccarat hand value is nine.

Baccarat Betting Options
There are three main betting options in baccarat.
  • Player Bet - A Player bet wins if the Player hand finishes closer to nine than the Banker hand.
  • Banker Bet - A Banker bet wins if the Banker hand finishes closer to nine than the Player hand. Some baccarat games apply a commission to winning Banker bets, while others use alternative payout structures. Check the rules and payout information displayed by the selected game before placing a wager.
  • Tie Bet- A Tie bet wins when the Player and Banker hands finish with the same final value. Payouts, commissions and additional side bets can vary between baccarat versions. Players should therefore check the selected game's information rather than assuming that every baccarat table uses exactly the same rules.

How a Baccarat Round Works
A typical baccarat round follows these steps:
  1. Choose a stake: Select an amount within the game's minimum and maximum betting limits.
  2. Place a bet: Choose Player, Banker or Tie.
  3. Cards are dealt: The Player and Banker hands normally receive two cards each.
  4. Hand values are calculated: The baccarat scoring system is applied to both hands.
  5. Additional cards may be dealt: A third card can be added according to predetermined rules.
  6. The hands are compared: The hand closest to nine wins and qualifying bets are settled.
Players do not normally decide whether another card is dealt. The dealer or game software follows the established baccarat drawing rules automatically.

How Does the Third-Card Rule Work?
The third-card rules determine whether either hand receives an additional card.
An initial two-card total of eight or nine is generally called a natural. When a natural occurs, another card is normally not required.
If neither hand has a natural, a third card may be dealt according to fixed rules. The Player hand's action is based on its initial total, while the Banker hand's action can depend on its own total and, in certain situations, the Player hand's third card.
For beginners, the key point is that players do not choose whether the Player or Banker hand draws another card. The dealer or game software applies the rules automatically.

How Are Winning Bets Determined?
After all required cards have been dealt, the final values of the Player and Banker hands are compared.
  • A Player bet wins when the Player hand is closest to nine.
  • A Banker bet wins when the Banker hand is closest to nine.
  • A Tie bet wins when both hands have the same final value.
  • If a Tie occurs, the treatment of Player and Banker bets depends on the rules of the selected game.
Winning wagers are settled according to the applicable payout. Any commission, special rule or side-bet condition should be checked before playing.

What to Check Before Playing Baccarat
Before placing a baccarat bet in Zambia, review the game's rules and betting information, including:
  • Minimum and maximum stakes.
  • Player, Banker and Tie payouts.
  • Any commission applied to Banker wins.
  • Third-card rules.
  • Available side bets and their payouts.
  • The specific baccarat variant being offered.
  • Whether the game is RNG-based or uses a live dealer.
  • The game's RTP information.
These details can differ between baccarat games, so checking the information provided with the selected table or game is important.

Baccarat Tips for Beginners
There is no betting system that can guarantee a winning baccarat result. Beginners can nevertheless make the game easier to understand by following a few straightforward principles:
  • Learn the baccarat card values before playing.
  • Remember that only the final digit of a total counts.
  • Check the payouts because they can vary between games.
  • Choose stakes that fit a predetermined budget.
  • Do not chase losses or increase stakes impulsively.
  • Do not assume previous results predict the next hand.
  • Treat side bets as optional and understand their rules before using them.
Previous hands do not determine the outcome of the next hand. Baccarat remains a game of chance, regardless of the results of earlier rounds.

Play Baccarat Responsibly
Baccarat is a game of chance. Understanding the rules, card values and betting options can help players follow the game, but no betting pattern or system can guarantee a winning result.
Before playing, set a spending limit and a time limit that you are comfortable with. Take regular breaks, avoid chasing losses and only gamble with money you can afford to lose.
18+ only. Gamble responsibly. Gambling involves financial risk.
