Suzuki rider Joan Mir will look to retain or even strengthen his place at the top of the MotoGP World Championship riders’ standings at the Grand Prix of Europe, set for Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia on Sunday 8 November 2020.

Mir currently tops the log with a haul of 137 points, despite not having won a race so far this season. He holds a 14-point advantage over nearest chaser, Fabio Quartararo of Yamaha, with Maverick Vinales (also Yamaha) just a further five points adrift.

Mir’s success has been based on consistency, with the 23-year-old Spaniard finishing in the top five in eight races. This has allowed him to accumulate points at a better rate than his rivals and put him on course for a first MotoGP title.

The Suzuki pilot claimed back-to-back third-place finishes at the Aragon and Teruel Grands Prix – both held at MotorLand Aragon, Alcaniz – to underline his class and composure. He’ll need to maintain that form for the first of two successive races in Valencia, where strong results could seal the championship.

“I’m very consistent, that’s true, and it seems like the hardest thing to do this season,” said Mir, who admits that he hungers for a first race win. “Right now I’m more interested in a championship win. Maybe there are other riders for whom the title is more important.”

As for threats to his place at the top of the standings, Mir explained: “Many say that my biggest rival is Quartararo, but he’s not the only one. I always look at Dovizioso because, if he finds something he needs to improve, he has the experience to win all the races."
