Ferrari's Carlos Sainz is hoping the issues that plagued him in Imola can be ironed out when the Formula One season heads to Monaco for the eighth race of the calendar on Sunday, May 26.

The Spaniard started in the third row of the grid at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, having seen his P5 from qualifying upgraded to a P4 following Oscar Piastri's three-place penalty for impeding Kevin Magnussen in Q1.

Sainz managed to fend off Piastri in the opening laps, but lost track position to the Australian due to pitting after the McLaren and he had to settle for P5, finishing a full 14.409 seconds behind team-mate Charles Leclerc, who took P3.

The 29-year-old driver dropped to fifth in the standings on 93 points, eight behind McLaren's Lando Norris and a further 12 adrift of Leclerc.

Sainz confessed that he had a poor weekend overall after problems crept up with the car and the changes made for race day didn't pan out.

"I think on my side I just struggled, to be honest, all weekend," he said. "After qualifying we found a couple of issues with the car that probably [held] us back today a bit, and it was not a very strong weekend at home here in front of the Tifosi.

"Now we need to have a look at how we can solve them and make a step forward for Monaco. At the same time, when you look at Charles, I think if we would have started in front ... The race pace is not bad at all, we just need to find something in qualifying.

"It's just something that we need to investigate carefully, and I'm pretty sure we will find a solution. The only thing I would say is that when the field is so tight, [with] one- [or] two-tenths between the top five drivers, every single thing counts.

"And I feel like this weekend we didn't put together the best of packages, and now we need to focus on putting that in Monaco."

2024 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix results:

Winner: Max Verstappen - Red Bull Racing
Second Place: Lando Norris - McLaren
Third Place: Charles Leclerc - Ferrari
