Hideki Matsuyama will be determined to become one of the most successful golfers in the history of the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

The Japanese star has won this tournament in 2016 and 2017 and only four players have won it more.

Phil Mickelson, Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler and Mark Calcavecchia are the four multiple winners of the Phoenix Open, all three-time champions.

Matsuyama won the maiden Waste Management Phoenix Open trophy after a playoff with Rickie Fowler in February 2016.

The Ehime-born player secured his victory on the fourth hole and the win moved him to 12th in the Official World Golf Ranking, the highest in his career.

Matsuyama returned to the Waste Management Phoenix Open in February 2017 and he again entered a playoff to defend his title, this time against Webb Simpson.

On the fourth playoff hole, Matsuyama made birdie to win the tournament for the second time in as many years.

Matsuyama went on to finish second in the 2017 U.S Open at Erin Hills, while the top three players in the world at the time (Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day) failed to make the cut.

As a result, Matsuyama reached second in the Official World Golf Ranking, his highest ever position, and the highest ever for a male Japanese golfer.

The 28-year-old then won the 2017 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, shooting a course record-tying 61 in the final round to win by five strokes.

It remains his last trophy on the PGA Tour and Matsuyama is keen to become the number one ranked player in the world this year.

“Becoming No. 1 in the world is the goal, I think, of all of us out here,” Matsuyama said.

“I still have some weak links in my game that I have to work on, but hopefully little by little, I’ll be able to improve and to fix what I need to, and hopefully someday compete for No. 1.

"I know there’s a lot of guys, great players ahead of me. It just gives me more incentive to work harder.”
