Max Verstappen will be eager to emulate Lewis Hamilton who remains the last driver to win back-to-back French Grand Prix titles.

The Red Bull Racing-RBPT driver ended two-time winner Hamilton's dominance in this race as Verstappen won the 2021 French Grand Prix at the Circuit Paul Ricard

However, Verstappen has failed to win the last two races in the current season having finished second at the Austrian Grand Prix on July 10.

The reigning world champion started in pole position at the Austrian Grand Prix, but he was overtaken after about twelve laps by Charles Leclerc.

Ferrari driver Leclerc went on to win the race, while Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton finished third after being beaten to the finishing line by Verstappen.

Verstappen is still placed at the top of the 2022 Drivers' Championship standings and he is followed by Leclerc and his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez respectively.

The Hasselt-born star's lead at the top of the standings has been reduced by Leclerc following the Austrian Grand Prix and he will be determined to successfully defend his French Grand Prix title.

“Yes, it was a bit more difficult than I expected it to be," Verstappen said after the Austrian Grand Prix.

"Basically, on any tyre, I was just struggling a lot for pace after a few laps – just a lot of deg – and something I cannot really explain right now, why it was so high, because I think normally, we are quite okay on the tyres.

“I expected it to be tough today, but I didn’t expect it to be like this. It’s just something we need to analyse, why this happened today. Even on a bad day, let’s say an off day, to only lose five points across the weekend is still good.”

Red Bull Racing-RBPT are placed at the top of the Constructors' Championship standings and they are followed by Ferrari and Mercedes respectively.
