Manchester City will look to continue where they left off last season when they take on Liverpool in the
Community Shield on Saturday, July 30.
Pep Guardiola's side pipped the Reds to the Premier League title by a single point on the final day of last season to deny them the domestic treble.
The Citizens failed to beat their closest challengers in three attempts during the 2021/22 campaign, having played out to 2-2 draws both home and away in the league before being beaten 3-2 in the FA Cup semi-finals by the eventual champions.
City have contested the Community Shield three times in the last four years, losing out to Leicester City in 2021 after lifting the trophy in 2018 and 2019. They are sixth on the all-time winners' list and are aiming to match Tottenham's tally of seven triumphs.
The league champions bolstered their attacking options with the signing of in-demand Norwegian striker Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund at the start of the transfer window and subsequently allowed Gabriel Jesus to join Arsenal.
Haaland made his non-competitive debut for the Citizens against Bayern Munich on Sunday and scored the only goal of the game to clinch a 1-0 win in the pre-season friendly in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Guardiola was pleased with his contribution and stressed that the new signing will only get better as time goes on.
"He scored a goal which is important, these type of goals in front of keeper - always he's there," the Spaniard said. "The first minutes, he needs more rhythm and time but already he had 45 minutes which is good for him.
"We'll see how he reacts to the niggles that he had in the previous weeks. After we come back we have long weeks to prepare every weekend game. In those two or three weeks we will get the best form."
