Five unbelievable FIFA World Cup moments

Since its inception in 1930, the FIFA World Cup has progressed to become one of the best sporting events in the world.

Every four years, footballs greatest nations battle it out for the coveted trophy which currently belongs to the French national team following their run to a second world crown in Russia two years ago.

Over the years there has been some iconic moments which has shaped the game as we know it today and Betway takes a closer look at five of these moments:

Suarez breaks African hearts

Before biting Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Suarez became the first footballer to be despised by a whole continent after he denied Ghana and Africa a place in the 2010 semi-finals.

Deep into extra-time, Black Stars forward Dominic Adiyiah headed the ball towards a certain goal only for Suarez to palm the ball away with both hands. Suarez was sent off and Ghana awarded a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan missed and Uruguay won the shootout to deny Africa a first final four appearance.

Cameroon defeat the defending champions!

Before Senegal stunned World Cup holders France in 2002, Cameroon pulled off a huge upset of their own at the 1990 showpiece in Italy.

The Indomitable Lions were given no chance against Diego Maradona's Argentina who had won the World Cup four years prior, with defeats to assorted club teams in preparation for the tournament having painted a grim picture for the African nation. But Francois Omam-Biyik’s solitary goal guided nine-man Cameroon to victory over the reigning champions on their way to topping the group. To their credit, Argentina would bounce back and reach the final before losing to West Germany.

Zidane loses his head

Having used his head for all the right reasons in the 1998 FIFA World Cup final in a clutch performance on home soil, Zinedine Zidane would blow his top at the 2006 event hosted in Germany.

Zidane had been crucial in leading France to the final in Berlin and he'd scored the game's opener but something Marco Materazzi uttered struck deep and in a moment of rage the Real Madrid great proceeded to head-butt the Italian defender. Needless to say, Zindane was sent off in what proved to be his final act as a professional footballer as Italy ultimately reigned triumphant.

Germany thump Brazil in their own back garden

Record five time champions Brazil have some unbelievable memories in World Cup tournaments: be it Pele leading them to glory as a 17-year-old or Ronaldo's brace in the 2002 final. But no moment shocked the world as much as their 7-1 loss to Germany in Belo Horizonte six years ago.

Yes Brazil were without both Neymar and captain Thiago Silva for the semi-final clash, but a loss by that magnitude could never have been predicted - especially not on home soil. The embarrassing defeat included an incredible six minute spell in which Germany scored four goals! Joachim Löw's men would end the tournaments as champions with a 1-0 victory over Argentina.

Hero or Villain? Maradona scores "Goal of the Century" moments after "Hand of God"

What are the chances that two of the most iconic goals in World Cup history would be scored just four minutes apart in the same game, by the same player!

Diego Maradona did just that in Argentina's famous 2-1 win over fierce rivals England at the 1986 World Cup. Moments after netting his infamous "Hand of Goal" goal in which he prodded the ball past Peter Shilton with his hand, the football great would net the best goal in World Cup history..

Maradona dribbled past five England players on his way to goal for a truly magical moment that would've left England fans perplexed, filled with anger and shocked, but no one could deny his genius as he left the fans inside the Estadio Azteca and those watching on the television with a moment to savour forever.
