The Magpies go into a tough week, which also includes a trip to Anfield, on the back of a 4-0 loss at Leicester City. The heavy defeat further underlined growing relegation fears at St James' Park despite the prospect of a catalogue of new signings in the January transfer window amid newfound wealth on Tyneside.

City edged past 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 for a sixth straight win in the league. Victory kept the Cityzens a point clear of Liverpool in second ahead of matches against Leeds United and Newcaslte this week.

“In these types of games when teams come to defend and expect action, you cannot make mistakes. We did it with Crystal Palace. Southampton we did not play well and that's why it happened but against Crystal Palace we made mistakes and believe me they are waiting for that,” said City manager, Pep Guardiola, who will be expecting a similar sort of game against Newcastle.

“For example, Leeds will be a completely different approach, completely. We dropped five points last season against them - five, being champions, two or three fixtures before the end of the season. It will be completely different.

“But when these teams come to wait and wait, to try to play but wait and wait for the right moment, you have to be patient. You cannot make mistakes and today we didn't. We were really good," he added.

City took six points off Newcastle last season. The Manchester club won 2-0 at home before a thrilling 4-3 victory in the reverse fixture. Ferran Torres netted once at Etihad Stadium before bagging a hat-trick at St James' Park.
