2026/27 La Liga

Matchday 1

Espanyol v Levante

Sunday 16 August, 19:00

RCDE Stadium

Espanyol will take aim at Levante in their opening 2026/27 La Liga fixture, set for the RCDE Stadium on Sunday 16 August, kick-off at 19:00.

Form and team news

Espanyol finished 11th in La Liga last season, missing out on the top half only on goal difference to Real Sociedad. The Periquitos will hope to continue their development under coach Manolo Gonzalez, with a top-10 finish their next glass ceiling.

The Periquitos have added key reinforcements like attacking midfielder Álex Calatrava from Castellón, alongside loan arrivals Gabriel Moscardo (from PSG) and Quilindschy Hartman (from Burnley). Departures include free transfers and loans for players like Fernando Calero and José Gragera.

Levante, meanwhile, finished in 16th place in La Liga last season, and only avoided relegation based on a superior head-to-head record with Osasuna and Mallorca (the latter were relegated alongside Girona and Real Oviedo). The Granotes have kept faith in coach Luis Castro and will target a finish more toward the middle third of the table.

The Granotas have added key free transfers like defender Jeremy Toljan from Sassuolo, midfielder Enzo Bardeli from USL Dunkerque, and centre-back Aïssa Mandi from Lille, alongside returning loanees.

What the teams are saying

Espanyol midfielder Edu Exposito on the start of the season: “These upcoming matches are good for us because they are very physical and the intensity is very high. They are a good way to start the season. Now it's not about getting results, but about finding the rhythm to get the three points in the first match against Levante.”

Head-to-head

In head-to-head stats, Espanyol and Levante have met in 44 matches dating back as far as 1940. The Periquitos have claimed 17 wins compared to 10 for the Granotes, while 17 games have been drawn.

The teams cancelled each other out in their league meetings last season, drawing 1-1 in Valencia in January 2026 and 0-0 in Barcelona in April 2026.
