Real Madrid will be taking a step into the unknown when they head to the Estadio Carlos Tartiere for the first time in 23 years to face
La Liga newcomers Real Oviedo on Sunday, August 24.
Los Blancos last crossed paths with Los Azules during the 2001-02 season, running out comprehensive 4-1 victors in the Copa del Rey, having not met in the Spanish top flight since 10 June 2001.
Real had to settle for a 1-1 draw on that occasion, while they won 4-1 in the reverse fixture at the Bernabeu on 14 January 2001.
However, the capital outfit have struggled to get over the line against the Asturians, drawing four of their last 10 La Liga encounters and suffering a surprise 1-0 defeat on 20 December 1998.
Real Oviedo are back in the big time for the first time since 2000-01, having spent last 24 years in the lower echelons of Spanish football.
They earned promotion via the playoffs last term after finishing four points behind Segunda Division champions Levante in third place before going on to beat Almeria in the semi-finals and Mirandes in the final.
Veljko Paunovic replaced Javier Calleja at the helm in March and guided Los Azules back to the top flight, but lost his opening match 2-0 away to Villarreal on August 15.
Xabi Alonso, who is set to make his Bernabeu debut against Osasuna on August 19, feels good about the team's identity since taking over the reins from Carlo ASncelotti in June.
"We're taking steps forward. It's difficult to measure. I'm sure we still have a few more to take," Alonso said.
"But we already introduced the main points and fundamental ideas at the Club World Cup, and we've been emphasising them these past two weeks. The feeling is good."
