Atletico Madrid will go in search of their first win of the new
La Liga season when they face Alaves at Mendizorrotza on Saturday, August 30.
Los Colchoneros have not made the start they'd hoped for after picking up just one point from their opening two matches and conceding three goals already.
Diego Simeone's side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Espanyol on the opening weekend before they squandered an early lead to draw 1-1 with newly-promoted Elche on August 23.
Atletico find themselves down in 13th place, five points adrift of main title rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid, who have both made perfect starts to the campaign.
The Babazorros occupy ninth position, having kicked off proceedings with a 2-1 victory over 2024–25 Segunda Division champions Levante followed by a 1-0 loss at Real Betis on August 22.
Eduardo Coudet's side held Atleti to a 0-0 draw in the corresponding fixture last term on May 3 after going down 2-1 at the Metropolitano on November 23.
Simeone saw signs that his team are moving in the right direction against Los Franjiverdes and is confident that results will come once the players start to gel.
"We have one point. Two games in which I'm holding on to the fact that the team is improving," the Argentine said.
"There are a lot of young players who need to be brought in to help the team grow. From the Espanyol game to today's game, there was improvement, they played better.
"The results aren't there, but we need to work, be patient, keep looking for the paths that were taken in much of this game, and when we find our strength, which is the key, we'll get more games and more points."
