2025/26 English Premier League

Matchday 2

Newcastle United v Liverpool

St James' Park

Newcastle upon Tyne, England

Monday, 25 August 2025

Kick-off is at 21h00

One of the most exciting fixtures in the Premier League era sees Newcastle entertain defending champions Liverpool at St James' Park on Monday, August 25.

The games between the two teams almost always produces goals and the corresponding fixture last season ended in a pulsating 3-3 draw, while the Reds ran out 2-0 victors at Anfield.

Their last 10 league meetings have delivered 29 goals, with just one clash finishing 0-0 which also came on Tyneside on 30 December 2020.

Arne Slot's side kicked off their title defence with a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield on August 15 as new signings Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike made their debuts.

The Merseyside giants had lost to Crystal Palace on penalties in the curtain-raiser to the new campaign, the Community Shield, which pitted the Premier League champions against the FA Cup winners.

The Magpies failed to take advantage of the extra man after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Aston Villa at Villa Park on August 16, with Ezri Konsa being sent off on 66 minutes.

Eddie Howe has only been able to add four new players to his squad during the current transfer window thus far, bringing in Malick Thiaw, Jacob Ramsey, Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale (loan).

The Tynesiders didn't have a great pre-season, losing four of their seven friendlies and only recording one win - against Carlisle United (4-0).

Alexander Isak missed the trip to Villa due to uncertainty over his future, but Howe insists the door remains open for the Swedish striker to return to the squad.

"Nothing has changed," Howe said when asked about the Isak situation. "The door is well and truly open.

"He has to decide what he wants to do. We would like a resolution. We need that clarity. You don't need any kind of distraction.

"I am not in control of that. There is one person who can control that. Let's wait and see. I have made my stance clear. I am concentrating on the team."

Slot paid tribute to Federico Chiesa, who stepped off the bench to put his team back in front just six minutes after coming on for Wirtz.

"After the fans sung for him so many times during the game already and last season as well, I think it is very nice for him to give them something in return – and that's definitely what he did today," the Dutchman said.

"[It was] an unbelievable atmosphere in the final minutes. I thought winning the league here would always be more special than winning a home game against Bournemouth, but the last six or seven minutes... wow. Wow, wow, wow. How impressive that was."
