Nkana Emerges Victorius In The Kitwe Derby

On the 20th of April, African football witnessed one of its most intense showdowns as Power Dynamos squared off against Nkana Football Club at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. The clash, a Week twenty-nine fixture of the MTN Super League, unfolded amidst palpable anticipation and favour.

Heading into the match, Power Dynamos were favourites, boasting a formidable record against Nkana, having emerged victorious in four of their previous five encounters. The first leg of the season, held in Lusaka the previous year, saw Power Dynamos secure a convincing 2-0 win, setting the stage for high expectations in their home turf clash against Nkana.

However, Nkana's journey in the league had been tumultuous, as they have been inconsistent and they battled relegation threats. Yet, a noticeable resurgence marked their performance in the second half of the season, hinting at a formidable challenge to their opponents.

As the referee's whistle signal the commencement of the derby, Nkana wasted no time asserting their dominance. Austin Banda's early goal in the 5th minute sent shockwaves through the stadium, setting the tone for a gripping encounter. Despite Power Dynamos enjoying superior ball possession and controlling various statistical aspects of the game, Nkana's defense remained resolute, thwarting every attempt at goal.

In the first half, Power Dynamos squandered opportunities, with Joshua Mutale missing the mark and captain Godfrey Ngwenya failing to convert a promising free kick. The second half saw an intensified assault from Power Dynamos, as they relentlessly pressed forward in search of an equalizer. However, Nkana's defensive fortitude held firm, frustrating their adversaries at every turn.

Amidst the escalating tension, Nkana seized a golden opportunity in the 80th minute, capitalizing on a loose ball in the box from a corner, with Musa Lamisa extending their lead. The jubilant celebrations that ensued among the Nkana faithful echoed across the stadium, as they savoured a historic triumph over their arch-rivals.

With a final scoreline of 2-0 in favour of Nkana, the derby concluded with the Red Devils reclaiming the bragging rights and painting Kitwe red. Notably, this encounter marked the first instance in history where the Kitwe Derby was contested outside the confines of Kitwe, adding a unique chapter to its storied legacy.
