The Reds are on a four-game unbeaten run in the league but have a catalogue of injuries to contend with. Club captain Jordan Henderson and Joe Gomez are the most recent players to join Virgil van Dijk on the treatment table.

Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are also struggling with knocks while Mohamed Salah tested positive for Covid-19 this week.

Talking after Liverpool's 1-1 draw away to Manchester City before the international break, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp praised his team's effort in what has been a busy and difficult period for the champions.

“Look, in the Premier League all opponents are tricky to play, unbelievable, so I don’t really make these kind of assumptions or think, ‘OK, we played them already and we played them already’,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com.

“We have to play them again and wherever it is it will be difficult. It’s a tough period and for the boys it just goes on. They go now and play two, some of them three, games for their national teams and yeah, it’s a tough time.

For the fans

“That’s why we have to make sure with the boys [that] we give them time, at least a few days when we can do it, to recover. Apart from that, the boys were ready to go again [against City] and I couldn’t be more happy about that.”

Leicester City entered the international break as Premier League leaders following a run of three successive wins. Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers is suitably delighted with his team's run of form following a poor end to last season.

"I think there’s a real sense that the players did really well last year," Rodgers explained. "When we spoke on it in pre-season, we understood that we want to continue to develop and improve.

"We’re not going to win every game, but the experiences of last year have allowed us to grow and develop as a team and we’ll look to put that in place this season.

"I don’t think we could’ve asked for a better start. Everyone probably questioned how we would start this season after the back end of last season, but I’ve always said that failing is learning.

"If anyone sees us not getting into the Champions League as failure, then okay. For us, it was about learning and developing and making sure we could continue to keep improving."

A late James Milner penalty led Liverpool to a 2-1 win over Leicester in the corresponding fixture last season following goals from Sadio Mane and James Maddison at Anfield.
