France and England will renew their rivalry with a clash in the 2026 World Cup Third Place Playoff, set for the Miami Stadium on Saturday 18 July. Here are three players from each team that could shine in the Florida sun and ensure a positive end to the tournament.

France

Kylian Mbappe

Though this World Cup will end in disappointment for Mbappe (regardless of the result of this Third Place Playoff), he could yet win the Golden Boot and/or Golden Ball, given his outstanding performances. If he can rack up a few more goals and put in another strong showing, personal accolades could yet follow.

Maxence Lacroix

After replacing the injured William Saliba early in the Semifinal against Spain, Lacroix will have a good chance of starting the Third Place Playoff. The Crystal Palace defender will relish the chance to test himself against high-quality forwards, as he looks to take his international career to a a higher plane.

Rayan Cherki

The Manchester City attacking midfielder has mostly been restricted to cameo showings in the 2026 World Cup, and this Third Place Playoff is the perfect chance for outgoing coach Didier Deschamps to let him off the leash. Cherki’s insouciant style and hunger to prove himself on the world stage could light up this match.

England

Anthony Gordon

After his fine performances through the knockout rounds – including his goal against Argentina in the semifinal – Gordon has proven himself as a reliable and elite performer for England. He will hope to cap off a fine tournament with a strong showing in Miami on Saturday.

Harry Kane

With six goals in the tournament thus far, there is still a chance Kane could end as the Golden Boot winner if he can find the back of the net several times against France. The Bayern Munich striker has enjoyed a sensational 2025-26 and will hope to end it on a high by winning this match – even if it falls short of the ultimate glory he would have been dreaming of.

Djed Spence

One of England’s better performers in the semifinal against Argentina, Spence was excellent defensively and provided a strong attacking outlet when given the chance to over- or under-lap his winger. The Three Lions may well rotate their team selection for this match, but Spence deserves a chance to test himself against France’s elite attack.
